Rory More and Karminsky Experience Inc. at the Tate Modern
Rory More was hotting up the Lowrey organ, joining him was the rising chanteuse exotique Gemma Ray on guitar and occasional singing too. Torch-singing, guitar-taming, pop-noir songstress Gemma Ray is one of the UK's most maverick and critically-acclaimed female musicians and songwriters. Confounding expectations at every turn, she effortlessly blends disparate genres into unified and grandiose sounds, as with her album Lights Out Zoltar! (which won an Independent Music Award for Best Eclectic Album). Gemma , though, has a different but equally powerful effect when she strips it back to voice and guitar, as with her album It's A Shame About Gemma Ray, recorded with Matt Verta-Ray of Heavy Trash. Gemma Ray often plays the guitar with a 6" carving knife, but this is no gimmick, as she is at ease with her craft, and even counts Jimmy Page as a fan. The knife might be dangerous but ultimately it is her heart-crushing songs which prove fatal - the killer hooks delivered with an enviable voice.
Born and raised in Essex, currently residing in Berlin, Gemma is now a globe-trotting dissident and a bastion of legitimacy in an age of imposters.
A swinging evening of easy listening at the Tate Modern Cafe 2 from lounge DJ vinyl supremos Karminsky Experience Inc with a special live performance from eclectic electric organist Rory More on his vintage Lowrey organ. Café 2 has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Everything on the menu is based on seasonal, fresh ingredients and their own homemade smoothies, leaf teas, and illy coffee are always available.
